San Ysidro's Affordable Housing Development, "The Iris," recently began construction, led by National CORE, the San Diego Housing Commission, and local government entities. This four-story project will feature 100 affordable apartments, including 27 one-bedroom, 32 two-bedroom, and 36 three-bedroom units for individuals and families earning less than 60% of the area median income.

Notably, 15 homes will be designated as permanent supportive housing for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. National CORE and the city secured a $5 million state grant to enhance the community further, revitalizing a 1.8-acre park, repairing streets, and constructing a crosswalk connecting the area to The Iris.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized the importance of simultaneously upgrading infrastructure and amenities alongside affordable housing construction. The city is overseeing park restoration, sidewalk improvements, and street enhancements, including a high-intensity activated crosswalk for pedestrian safety.
City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno, representing San Ysidro, praised the project as a crucial step forward in addressing housing needs, stating, "The Iris at San Ysidro is a much-needed project that will provide 100 homes to families in need."
The completion of this community is anticipated in the summer of 2025, marking a positive stride in expanding affordable housing options.
